Artist Focus: Chinese Artist Zhang Enli

Admiring the abstract beauty of his gestural brushwork

Chinese artist Zhang Enli was born in Jilin in 1965. Keen on using the external world as a mirror to record the ordinary aspects of contemporary life, he is deeply inspired by the mystery and uncertainty of fate. When sharing his creative intentions, Zhang states, “Sometimes, the obscured object also creates a trace with the passing of time. This is the origin of my recent abstract paintings. When I look at a wall, or sky, it is full of traces, and then I name these traces after someone; it becomes very interesting, it is visible yet invisible.”

Designer Simon Chong is deeply inspired by Zhang Enli's ability to be both figurative and literal in his form, and is captivated by his freer brushwork that expresses an essence into abstract form. As such, he brings this artist’s canvases into his projects whenever he can, personalising them with his stunning interior design.
