Beyond Style: Simon Chong's Philosophy of "Design as Play"

In an industry often confined by rigid stylistic frameworks, we believe design should be a free exploration, sometimes a game of possibility
Our design principal, Simon Chong, centres his work on this concept of "play" - an intuitive process of weaving together proportion, luxurious materials, and cultural narratives. The result is a space that transcends fleeting trends, becoming a genuine extension of the client's personality, and showcasing a unique, sincere, and enduring aesthetic.

In Simonās eyes, design is fundamentally a process of "play," but one that is deeply intentional. As he states: "This 'play' is not reckless; it is a free exploration: playing with proportion, lines, colours, materials, and even cultural elements and artworks. Through this way of thinking, spaces are no longer limited by prescriptive style labels, but instead express a unique, personal attitude."
This philosophy allows us to approach each project as a bespoke creation. It is about balancing the order of function with the play of creative expression, ultimately crafting environments that bring both peace of mind and vitality to those who inhabit them.

Simon's journey into interior design - a transition he describes as "lucky" from his earlier career in banking - is rooted in a keen sensitivity to the details of life and an commitment to aesthetics. Whether working in Hong Kong or mainland China, his emphasis remains consistent: design must strike a perfect balance between function and aesthetics, with the ultimate goal being client satisfaction and a truly liveable space.

Our work at Simon Chong Design Consultant never blindly follows trends or confines itself to any particular style. We believe great design must closely meet the real needs of the residents and reveal their unique personality through meticulous details.
Consider the transformative power of this approach through these two examples:
Small Family Home: A narrow entryway can be reimagined as a multi-functional area by using strategically placed mirrors to visually expand the space, incorporating a hidden shoe cabinet for seamless utility, and dedicating a corner for a child's treasured artwork, allowing function and emotion to coexist beautifully.
Art Collectorās Residence: The living room is elevated to a dual-purpose space - a living area and a private exhibition stage. We seamlessly integrate a client's collection into a display wall, highlighting the works with soft, purposeful lighting to celebrate the collection and its collector.
Design, for us, is the ultimate game. And the reward is an undefinable, yet distinctly and authentically your own, space of inspiration.
