Deconstructing Contemporary Eastern Luxury: The Harmonious Dialogue of Red and Green

The interplay of red and green is a harmonious scene perfected by nature - green leaves setting off red flowers has always been a timeless match. Masterful in leveraging colours, Simon Chong introduced this naturally inspired contrast into the interior design of the Yangzhou New Energy·Wenchangying project. Through his signature elegant and luxurious approach, he breathes new life into this classic scheme, showcasing a strong dialogue between rich cultural heritage and modern aesthetics

The secret to successfully wielding the power of red and green lies in mastering the "degree" and "texture." Simon emphasizes, "Choosing the right hue is crucial. Avoid bright, glaring, and overly saturated colors. Instead, embrace the muted dignity of 'Chinese red' and the calm, understated richness of 'emerald green' or 'dark green’.”

As demonstrated in the Yangzhou New Energy·Wenchangying project, the striking touch of red does not ostentatiously occupy the visual center. Rather, it subtly "embellishes" the space—which is grounded by large areas of neutral colors like off-white, light gray, and natural wood tones—through carefully selected artworks, individual furniture pieces, wall coverings and soft furnishings. This precise use of red is both an echo of the traditional literati spirit and the dynamic soul that activates the entire space.

This sophisticated color scheme transcends typical stylistic and spatial limitations due to its profound cultural resonance and visual balance. In residential spaces, it creates corners that are both warm and deeply tasteful. In commercial environments, such as the sales office and clubhouse of Wenchang Ying, it elevates to a powerful spatial memory point, conveying the brand's heritage and value.

In a modern minimalist setting, a green velvet sofa paired with a red abstract painting instantly injects a sense of retro luxury. In a space that embraces natural simplicity, red ceramic pots and rich green plants complement each other, forging a rustic yet warm Zen-like atmosphere. The key is to allow the colors to enter into a "dialogue" rather than a "confrontation," using varied materials—such as the soft red of velvet, the deep green of marble, and the metallic gleam of brass—to add rich layers and create a complex visual narrative.

When experimenting with green and red colour schemes, Simon suggests starting with details before committing to a larger scale. Introduce a red side table in front of a green wall in the study, or use red cushions to echo the exterior greenery in a predominantly white living room. These subtle arrangements allow you to test the atmosphere of the colors and gradually establish a personal and sophisticated style for the space.

Ultimately, the goal is to maintain consistency in the purity and brightness of the hues, allowing red and green to form a clear, dynamic partnership. Red brings focus and warmth; green provides balance and a sense of breathing room. When thoughtfully placed side by side, they become two protagonists on a stage—one dynamic and one still, one cool and one warm—together creating your own personal drama of contemporary Eastern luxury.
