The Architecture of Stillness: Redefining the Oriental Narrative in Chongqing

Through the delicate intersection of Oriental negative space and contemporary geometry, a project is transformed into a meditative poem for modern living
Integrating nature with modern architecture is the ultimate test of a designer’s restraint. Instead of relying on literal Oriental motifs to fill a space, Simon Chong and his team opted for a subtler, more sophisticated approach for the Longxing Jinmao Mansion. Situated within the landscape of a Chongqing park, the building functions less like a structure and more like a quiet courtyard - a volume engaged in a pure dialogue with the sky and the water surrounding it.
The team eschewed traditional rooflines in favour of translucent crystal tiles. Beneath them, an installation of light emerges; as the sun shifts, the interior is bathed in a dappled glow, reminiscent of morning mist filtering through a forest.
This devotion to proportion extends to the building’s elevations. Vertical grids, stretching from floor to ceiling, provide a sense of architectural purity, stripping away visual clutter and granting the space room to breathe. In the hospitality area, the team abandoned ornamentation in favour of materiality. Natural stone, with its sweeping, ink-like veins, becomes the focal point - commanding the space without the need for superficial embellishment.
A space capable of quieting the mind must possess the inherent warmth of a home. In the living area, material interplay takes centre stage: cool concrete, warm timber, and polished lacquer coexist in a deliberate experiment. Geometries - square and circular - initially appear at odds, yet they find a delicate balance against the backdrop of the park’s greenery.
There is no desire here to mimic a showroom. The focus remains steadfastly on consistency - the texture of a rug, the subtle refraction of light, the curated mood of the room. It is a space that does not strive for attention but instead breathes, offering the distinct, unassuming comfort of an old friend’s residence.
