Simon Chong shares his insights on the delicate relationship between art and design, and explains why a truly enduring space must transcend trends and evolve with its occupants

As one of the designers most knowledgeable about art, our principal, Simon Chong, is often asked about the boundary between art and design. He admits that art easily captivates, while design requires a clear mind. While fundamentally different, the two inspire and complement each other during the creative process.

Simon once said, "When creating a painting, you work within a small framework. The same is true for design. There is a pre-defined framework, but the framework itself does not constitute any limitation. What matters is the presentation within that framework." For him, the value of design lies not in the reproduction of form, but in creating a spatial language with depth and emotion within limited constraints.

He prefers to blend Eastern and Western elements, old and new, and emphasizes a design aesthetic that endures. He bluntly stated, "It's easy to follow fleeting trends, but it's actually a waste." When it comes to residential spaces, he prioritizes space and flexibility, allowing the design to evolve over time and grow with its inhabitants.

In Simon's eyes, design is an extension of one's lifestyle. Like a work of art, truly outstanding design endures the test of time, retaining its value and warmth, and continuing to infuse life with inspiration and meaning.
